Win and Place

win/place bet ticket

Win

Select a runner to finish 1st in a nominated race. For Tote betting, you may select more than one runner for a Win but each extra selection will incur an extra cost. For Fixed Odds betting, only one Win selection per bet slip is permitted.

Place

Select a runner to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd in a nominated race. Your selection may finish in any of these positions. For Tote betting, you may select more than one runner for a Place but each extra selection will incur an extra cost. For Fixed Odds betting, only one Place selection per bet slip is permitted.

Each Way (Win and Place)

This combines Win and a Place bet on the same runner. If the selected runner wins, there will be a Win AND a Place dividend to collect. If it finishes 2nd or 3rd, there will be a Place dividend to collect.

For Tote betting you may select more than one runner in an each way bet. If one of these runners does win, there will be a Win and a Place dividend to collect on that runner. If the other selection finishes 2nd or 3rd, there will be other Place dividends to collect.

For Fixed Odds betting, only one each way selection per bet slip is permitted.

Odds vs Evens / Inside vs Outside

‘Odds vs Evens’ markets are available on all Australian Thoroughbred, Harness and Greyhound events where traditional Fixed Odds ‘Win and Place’ betting is offered. ‘Inside vs Outside’ markets are available on Australian Greyhound races where traditional Fixed Odds ‘Win and Place’ betting is offered.

Only one transaction at a time can be placed via the Tote ‘Win and Place’ bet slip. If for example a runner number and ‘Outside’ was marked or ‘Odds’ and ‘Inside’ was marked, the ticket would error.

Where Pre Post Betting is offered, ‘Odds vs Evens’ and ‘Inside vs Outside’ markets will only become available on race-day once notification of final scratchings is released. Where Pre-Post betting is not offered, the markets will open shortly following the Fixed Odds ‘Win and Place’ market.

Close of markets will occur at race advertised start time (AST) for both ‘Odds vs Evens’ and ‘Inside vs Outside’.

Betting Rules - ‘Odds vs Evens’ and ‘Inside vs Outside’ Wagers are subject to ‘All In’ betting rules, meaning in the event a runner(s) is scratched from a race after a wager has been placed, the bet will stand at the price quoted. No deductions will be applicable to winning bets placed prior to the scratching(s) nor will refunds be payable. The only exception is if all odd, all even, all runners drawn inside or all runners drawn outside are scratched, or the event is abandoned, in which case all bets will be declared void and refunded.

Calculating the Cost of your Ticket

In the following calculation and marked ticket example, the bet is on three selections for a $2 win and a $3 place.

No. of selections   Win Investment   No. of selections   Place Investment
3 x $2 + 3 x $3
Win bet - $6 + Place bet - $9

Total of bet = $15

Place Dividend Policy

  • 8 or more starters - Tote and Fixed Odds will pay 3 place dividends.
  • 5 to 7 starters - Tote and Fixed Odds will pay 1st and 2nd place dividends.
  • 4 or less starters - Tote and Fixed Odds will pay a WIN dividend only. (no place betting)

For Tote betting late scratchings do not affect the Place Dividend Policy except where the field numbers drop below 5 runners.

See tables below (Tote only):

If start with 8 Pay 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Then scratch to 7 Still pay 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Then scratch to 6 Still pay 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Then scratch to 5 Still pay 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Then scratch to 4 Now pay Win only
If start with 7 Pay 1st and 2nd
Then scratch to 6 Still pay 1st and 2nd
Then scratch to 5 Still pay 1st and 2nd
Then scratch to 4 Now pay Win only
If start with 4 Pay Win only

Note: The number of placings payable may vary from Fixed Odds to Tote on the same race. Pay indicators are provided on the race screens of Info Terminals, TABTouch Terminals and Teletext.

Refunds / Late Scratchings

Where a selection/s is a late scratching the customer can either cancel the ticket for a full refund allowing for reinvestment providing the event is still open to betting or the ticket can be retained for a refund after the race is finished and dividends have been released.

If a late (barrier) scratching occurs and the bet is unable to be cancelled due to race closure, full or part refunds are only then available upon dividend release.

Where a race or meeting is postponed or abandoned all bets made become refunds. Advice regarding the payment of refunds will be made through terminal messages.

Dead Heats

In the event of a dead heat, Tote Win and Place bets are paid at half the face value of the full dividend where there are two dead heaters, one third of the dividend for three dead heaters and so on. The guaranteed minimum Win and Place Tote return payable on a dead heat runner is $1.00, even in circumstances where a half or third of the face value of the full dividend is less than one dollar.

The following example demonstrates a dead heat for third place with the minimum Tote dividend of $1.00.

No. Win Dividend Place Dividend
1st 10 $9.00 $2.80
2nd 5 - $4.00
3rd 1 - $1.00
3rd 2 - $1.00

In the event of a dead heat for Fixed Odds betting, the payout will be at half face value of the ticket where there are two dead heaters, one third of the face value of the ticket where there are three dead heaters and so on. There is no guaranteed minimum Win and Place divided for Fixed Odds betting on a dead heat runner.

Mismarked Slips

If a customer mark is missing from one of the following columns:

  • Meeting
  • Race
  • Selection

An error message will be printed with the word REQUIRED and after pressing “Next” the operator will see the error message on the betting screen. By adding the missing mark to the required column this slip can be reprocessed through the reader.

An error message with the word INVALID requires the customer to complete a new slip for processing.

CUP Option

This option can be used for nominated Cup races as programmed by TAB.

Customers will need to mark the bracketed word CUP for the bet to default to the Cup race.

The ‘Cup’ facility is active for both Tote and Fixed Odds.

There is no need to mark any other meeting or race details once this area has been marked.

Field (FD)

Once the field FD selection has been marked on the win and place slip, no other selection can be marked.

Note: The FD selection is not available for Fixed Odds.

Bet Value Default

For Tote bets, if the bet value column is left blank, or the terminal cannot identify the markings, the customer automatically receives a default bet of fifty cents for the win and fifty cents for the place, total bet costing $1.00 for every selection chosen. Fifty-cent bets will only pay out half the displayed dividend.

If the bet value column is left blank for Fixed Odds bets, the customer will automatically receive a default bet for $1.00 for the Win and $1.00 for the Place, for a total bet cost of $2.00.
